Applying cold packs can help control swelling in the wrists, says Susan Isernhagen, a physical therapist in Duluth, Minnesota. You can buy cold packs in drugstores, or you may make your own by placing a few ice in a plastic material bag. Wrap the load up in a material and apply it to your wrists for quarter-hour, then remove it for quarter-hour. Continue the 15-minutes-on, 15-minutes-off circuit for so long as necessary.Wear gloves. Cool hands indicate constricted arteries. And constricted arteries indicate less blood-and nourishment-to overworked palm and wrist tissue. Wearing gloves can help to keep the hands warm and increase blood flow. Imagine if you're keyboarding? Just take off the finger-tips of every glove, and you can type with ease.Invest in a splint. Using a splint can prevent you from twisting your wrist with techniques that aggravate CTS symptoms. In one research of 331 people who have CTS, 66 percent acquired comfort with a blend of splinting and taking anti-inflammatory drugs.A splint includes a cloth-covered steel brace to support your wrist and Velcro straps for fastening. When you're wearing one, your wrist should be almost direct, in about the same position as if you are possessing a pen. This position will keep the carpal tunnel as wide open as is possible.Splinting works best for folks who are under age 50 and who have had CTS for less than 10 weeks, with only intermittent symptoms. A splint can be worn at night, during the day, or all the time-whenever your pain is most severe. You can purchase splints in medical source stores and many drugstores. But check with your doctor to be sure your splint suits properly.Trim out caffeine. Steer clear of caffeinated foods and beverages such as chocolate, cola, tea, and espresso. Caffeine constricts arteries, which reduces blood flow to the hands and aggravates CTS.Get off your butts. Like caffeine containing drinks, smoking constricts arteries, which impedes blood circulation to the hands. And this worsens CTS symptoms.Over-The-Counter DrugsChoose an anti-inflammatory. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (Aleve) all reduce pain and inflammation. If aspirin upsets your abdomen, try the enteric-coated kind. It dissolves in the intestines rather than in the stomach. How about acetaminophen? From the pain reliever but not an anti-inflammatory. So that it isn't especially effective against inflammatory conditions like CTS.Other Good ChoicesMassageLet yourself be manipulated. Some people with CTS swear by deep-tissue body-work targeting their arms, wrists, and hands.HomeopathyTry different remedies. Corresponding to homeopath Dana Ullman, wrist problems often answer well to microdoses of certain natural medicines. The most effective arrangements include Bryonia, Hypericum, Rhus toxicodendron, and Ruta graveolens. Which one will work right for you depends on your individual symptoms, so talk with a homeopath.NaturopathyTake the plunge. Distinction hydrotherapy, which involves alternately dipping your hands and wrists in hot and cold water, is a well liked treatment among naturopaths. "It's a simple, effective way to increase flow to your wrists," says Douglas C. Lewis, N.D., a faculty member at Bastyr School in Kenmore, Washington. "It improves diet, eliminates wastes, and helps decrease pain."Dr. Lewis advises immersing your hands and wrists in tolerably hot water for three minutes, then in cool water for 30 moments. Repeat 3 to 5 times, once or twice each day.Medical MeasuresFor especially severe CTS symptoms, some mainstream doctors administer shots of powerful anti-inflammatories called corticosteroids. Regrettably, this approach doesn't always work. In one study, 78 percent of individuals with CTS noticed their symptoms return within 1 . 5 years of obtaining corticosteroid injections. What's more, longterm use of corticosteroids can cause serious area results such as high blood circulation pressure, osteoporosis, and adrenal gland damage.Surgery is considered a last-resort treatment for CTS. During the procedure, the cosmetic surgeon removes a portion of the ligament that forms one area of the carpal tunnel. This usually relieves pressure on the median nerve-although in 15 percent of instances, CTS symptoms persist. After surgery, you must wear a splint for 2 to 3 3 weeks. You may experience bloating at the bottom of your thumb for 4 months. Approximately 6 months may pass before your palm strength and strength go back to normal.
