Applying cold packs can help control bloating in the wrists, says Susan Isernhagen, a physical therapist in Duluth, Minnesota. You can purchase cold packs in drugstores, or you can make your own by putting a few ice in a cheap bag. Wrap the load up in a fabric and use it to your wrists for quarter-hour, then remove it for quarter-hour. Continue the 15-minutes-on, 15-minutes-off cycle for so long as necessary.Wear gloves. Frosty hands mean constricted blood vessels. And constricted blood vessels signify less blood-and nourishment-to overworked palm and wrist tissue. Wearing gloves can help keep your hands warm and increase blood flow. Imagine if you're keyboarding? Just take off the finger-tips of every glove, and you can type with ease.Invest in a splint. Putting on a splint can prevent you from bending your wrist with techniques that aggravate CTS symptoms. In one review of 331 people who have CTS, 66 percent got relief with a combination of splinting and taking anti-inflammatory drugs.A splint includes a cloth-covered steel brace to support your wrist and Velcro straps for fastening. If you are putting on one, your wrist should be almost straight, in a comparable position as when you're possessing a pen. This position continues the carpal tunnel as open up as possible.Splinting is most effective for people who are under get older 50 and who have had CTS for less than 10 weeks, with only intermittent symptoms. A splint can be worn during the night, throughout the day, or all the time-whenever your pain is worst. You can purchase splints in medical supply stores and many drugstores. But check with your doctor to make sure your splint meets properly.Slice out caffeine. Stay away from caffeinated foods and beverages such as chocolates, cola, tea, and coffee. Caffeine constricts blood vessels, which reduces blood circulation to the hands and aggravates CTS.Get off your butts. Like caffeine, smoking constricts blood vessels, which impedes blood circulation to the hands. And this worsens CTS symptoms.Over-The-Counter DrugsChoose an anti-inflammatory. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (Aleve) all reduce pain and swelling. If aspirin upsets your belly, try the enteric-coated kind. It dissolves in the intestines alternatively than in the abdomen. How about acetaminophen? It's a pain reliever but not an anti-inflammatory. So it isn't especially effective against inflammatory conditions like CTS.Other Good ChoicesMassageLet yourself be manipulated. Some people with CTS swear by deep-tissue body-work focusing on their biceps and triceps, wrists, and hands.HomeopathyTry different remedies. Relating to homeopath Dana Ullman, wrist problems often react well to microdoses of certain natural medicines. The most effective arrangements include Bryonia, Hypericum, Rhus toxicodendron, and Ruta graveolens. Which will work right for you depends on your own symptoms, so check with a homeopath.NaturopathyTake the plunge. Comparison hydrotherapy, that involves alternately dipping the hands and wrists in hot and cool water, is a popular treatment among naturopaths. "It's a simple, useful way to increase blood flow to your wrists," says Douglas C. Lewis, N.D., a faculty member at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington. "It enhances diet, eliminates wastes, and helps decrease pain."Dr. Lewis advises immersing the hands and wrists in tolerably warm water for 3 minutes, then in cold water for 30 mere seconds. Repeat three to five times, once or twice every day.Medical MeasuresFor especially severe CTS symptoms, some mainstream doctors administer injections of powerful anti-inflammatories called corticosteroids. Unfortunately, this process doesn't always work. In a single review, 78 percent of individuals with CTS found their symptoms returning within 18 months of receiving corticosteroid injections. Also, longterm use of corticosteroids can cause serious area effects such as high blood circulation pressure, osteoporosis, and adrenal gland destruction.Surgery is known as a last-resort treatment for CTS. During the procedure, the doctor removes some of the ligament that forms one area of the carpal tunnel. This usually relieves strain on the median nerve-although in 15 percent of cases, CTS symptoms persist. After surgery, you must wear a splint for 2-3 3 weeks. You may experience bloating at the base of your thumb for up to 4 months. Approximately six months may pass before your hands strength and endurance return to normal.
