Applying cold packs can help control swelling in the wrists, says Susan Isernhagen, a physical therapist in Duluth, Minnesota. You can purchase cold packs in drugstores, or you may make your own by adding a few ice cubes in a plastic material bag. Wrap the load up in a fabric and use it to your wrists for a quarter-hour, then take it off for 15 minutes. Continue the 15-minutes-on, 15-minutes-off routine for so long as necessary.Slip on gloves. Chilly hands imply constricted blood vessels. And constricted arteries indicate less blood-and nourishment-to overworked hands and wrist cells. Using gloves can help keep your hands warm and increase blood circulation. Imagine if you're keyboarding? Just take off the finger-tips of every glove, and you can type with ease.Invest in a splint. Putting on a splint can prevent you from bending your wrist with techniques that aggravate CTS symptoms. In a single review of 331 people who have CTS, 66 percent received pain relief with a combo of splinting and taking anti-inflammatory drugs.A splint includes a cloth-covered metallic brace to aid your wrist and Velcro straps for fastening. When you're wearing one, your wrist should be almost direct, in about the same position as if you are having a pen. This position will keep the carpal tunnel as wide open as is possible.Splinting is most effective for individuals who are under years 50 and who've had CTS for under 10 months, with only intermittent symptoms. A splint can be worn at night, during the day, or all the time-whenever your pain is worst. You can purchase splints in medical supply stores and many drugstores. But check with your doctor to ensure your splint suits properly.Lower out caffeine. Stay away from caffeinated foods and drinks such as delicious chocolate, cola, tea, and espresso. Caffeine constricts blood vessels, which reduces blood flow to the hands and aggravates CTS.Get off your butts. Like levels of caffeine, smoking constricts blood vessels, which impedes blood flow to the hands. And this worsens CTS symptoms.Over-The-Counter DrugsChoose an anti-inflammatory. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (Aleve) all reduce pain and inflammation. If aspirin upsets your belly, try the enteric-coated kind. It dissolves in the intestines rather than in the stomach. How about acetaminophen? From the pain reliever but not an anti-inflammatory. So that it isn't especially effective against inflammatory conditions like CTS.Other Good ChoicesMassageLet yourself be manipulated. Some individuals with CTS swear by deep-tissue body-work focusing on their hands, wrists, and hands.HomeopathyTry different remedies. Relating to homeopath Dana Ullman, wrist problems often respond well to microdoses of certain natural medicines. The very best preparations include Bryonia, Hypericum, Rhus toxicodendron, and Ruta graveolens. Which one will work right for you depends on your own symptoms, so talk with a homeopath.NaturopathyTake the plunge. Distinction hydrotherapy, which involves alternately dipping the hands and wrists in hot and cool water, is a popular treatment among naturopaths. "It's a straightforward, successful way to increase blood flow to your wrists," says Douglas C. Lewis, N.D., a faculty member at Bastyr College or university in Kenmore, Washington. "It boosts nourishment, eliminates wastes, and helps decrease pain."Dr. Lewis advises immersing the hands and wrists in tolerably warm water for 3 minutes, then in cool water for 30 mere seconds. Repeat three to five times, once or twice each day.Medical MeasuresFor especially severe CTS symptoms, some mainstream doctors administer injections of powerful anti-inflammatories called corticosteroids. Regrettably, this approach doesn't always work. In one study, 78 percent of people with CTS saw their symptoms give back within 1 . 5 years of obtaining corticosteroid injections. Also, longterm use of corticosteroids can cause serious side results such as high blood circulation pressure, osteoporosis, and adrenal gland destruction.Surgery is known as a last-resort treatment for CTS. Through the procedure, the medical expert removes some of the ligament that forms one part of the carpal tunnel. This usually relieves strain on the median nerve-although in 15 percent of cases, CTS symptoms persist. After surgery, you must wear a splint for 2 to 3 3 weeks. You might experience bloating at the bottom of your thumb for 4 months. Around 6 months may go away before your side strength and endurance go back to normal.
