Applying cold packs can help control swelling in the wrists, says Susan Isernhagen, a physical therapist in Duluth, Minnesota. You can purchase cold packs in drugstores, or you may make your own by putting a few ice cubes in a plastic bag. Cover the pack in a fabric and put it to your wrists for quarter-hour, then remove it for quarter-hour. Continue the 15-minutes-on, 15-minutes-off circuit for as long as necessary.Slip on gloves. Frigid hands mean constricted arteries. And constricted arteries mean less blood-and nourishment-to overworked palm and wrist tissues. Putting on gloves can help keep the hands warm and increase blood circulation. Imagine if you're keyboarding? Just cut off the finger-tips of every glove, and you may type with ease.Invest in a splint. Using a splint can prevent you from twisting your wrist in ways that aggravate CTS symptoms. In a single analysis of 331 people who have CTS, 66 percent received pain relief with a blend of splinting and taking anti-inflammatory drugs.A splint contains a cloth-covered steel brace to support your wrist and Velcro straps for fastening. When you're wearing one, your wrist should be almost straight, in about the same position as if you are having a pen. This position helps to keep the carpal tunnel as wide open as you possibly can.Splinting is most effective for individuals who are under age 50 and who've had CTS for under 10 a few months, with only intermittent symptoms. A splint can be worn during the night, throughout the day, or all the time-whenever your pain is worst. You can purchase splints in medical supply stores and many drugstores. But consult with your doctor to be sure your splint meets properly.Minimize out caffeine. Stay away from caffeinated foods and beverages such as delicious chocolate, cola, tea, and caffeine. Caffeine constricts arteries, which reduces blood circulation to the hands and aggravates CTS.Log off your butts. Like levels of caffeine, smoking constricts blood vessels, which impedes blood circulation to the hands. And that worsens CTS symptoms.Over-The-Counter DrugsChoose an anti-inflammatory. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (Aleve) all decrease pain and inflammation. If aspirin upsets your tummy, try the enteric-coated kind. It dissolves in the intestines somewhat than in the belly. What about acetaminophen? It's a pain reliever however, not an anti-inflammatory. So it isn't especially effective against inflammatory conditions like CTS.Other Good ChoicesMassageLet yourself be manipulated. Some people with CTS swear by deep-tissue body-work focusing on their arms, wrists, and hands.HomeopathyTry different remedies. According to homeopath Dana Ullman, wrist problems often act in response well to microdoses of certain homeopathic medicines. The very best arrangements include Bryonia, Hypericum, Rhus toxicodendron, and Ruta graveolens. Which one will work best for you depends on your individual symptoms, so check with a homeopath.NaturopathyTake the plunge. Compare hydrotherapy, that involves alternately dipping your hands and wrists in hot and cool water, is a popular treatment among naturopaths. "It's a straightforward, productive way to increase blood flow to your wrists," says Douglas C. Lewis, N.D., a faculty member at Bastyr School in Kenmore, Washington. "It boosts nourishment, eliminates wastes, and helps reduce pain."Dr. Lewis recommends immersing the hands and wrists in tolerably warm water for three minutes, then in cold water for 30 mere seconds. Repeat three to five times, once or twice per day.Medical MeasuresFor especially severe CTS symptoms, some mainstream doctors administer injections of powerful anti-inflammatories called corticosteroids. Regrettably, this process doesn't always work. In a single review, 78 percent of people with CTS saw their symptoms gain within 1 . 5 years of receiving corticosteroid injections. Also, longterm use of corticosteroids can cause serious aspect results such as high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and adrenal gland damage.Surgery is known as a last-resort treatment for CTS. Through the procedure, the physician removes a portion of the ligament that forms one side of the carpal tunnel. This usually relieves pressure on the median nerve-although in 15 percent of circumstances, CTS symptoms persist. After surgery, you must wear a splint for 2 to 3 3 weeks. You may experience bloating at the base of your thumb for 4 months. Approximately 6 months may pass before your hands strength and stamina go back to normal.
