Applying cold packs can help control swelling in the wrists, says Susan Isernhagen, a physical therapist in Duluth, Minnesota. You can buy cold packs in drugstores, or you may make your own by putting a few ice in a plastic bag. Wrap the load up in a cloth and apply it to your wrists for 15 minutes, then take it off for 15 minutes. Continue the 15-minutes-on, 15-minutes-off cycle for so long as necessary.Wear gloves. Cool hands mean constricted blood vessels. And constricted arteries imply less blood-and nourishment-to overworked side and wrist cells. Wearing gloves can help to keep the hands warm and increase blood flow. Imagine if you're keyboarding? Just take off the finger-tips of every glove, and you may type easily.Choose splint. Wearing a splint can prevent you from twisting your wrist with techniques that aggravate CTS symptoms. In a single research of 331 people with CTS, 66 percent acquired pain relief with a mixture of splinting and taking anti-inflammatory drugs.A splint consists of a cloth-covered metallic brace to support your wrist and Velcro straps for fastening. When you're wearing one, your wrist should be almost straight, in about the same position as if you are positioning a pen. This position keeps the carpal tunnel as wide open as you possibly can.Splinting works best for folks who are under years 50 and who have had CTS for less than 10 a few months, with only intermittent symptoms. A splint can be worn during the night, during the day, or all the time-whenever your pain is worst. You can purchase splints in medical source stores and many drugstores. But check with your doctor to be sure your splint works with properly.Trim out caffeine. Steer clear of caffeinated foods and drinks such as delicious chocolate, cola, tea, and coffee. Caffeine constricts arteries, which reduces blood flow to the hands and aggravates CTS.Get off your butts. Like caffeine, smoking constricts blood vessels, which impedes blood flow to the hands. And this worsens CTS symptoms.Over-The-Counter DrugsChoose an anti-inflammatory. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (Aleve) all reduce pain and irritation. If aspirin upsets your tummy, try the enteric-coated kind. It dissolves in the intestines rather than in the tummy. How about acetaminophen? From the pain reliever but not an anti-inflammatory. So it isn't especially effective against inflammatory conditions like CTS.Other Good ChoicesMassageLet yourself be manipulated. Some individuals with CTS swear by deep-tissue body-work concentrating on their biceps and triceps, wrists, and hands.HomeopathyTry different remedies. Matching to homeopath Dana Ullman, wrist problems often answer well to microdoses of certain natural medicines. The very best arrangements include Bryonia, Hypericum, Rhus toxicodendron, and Ruta graveolens. Which will work right for you depends on your own symptoms, so check with a homeopath.NaturopathyTake the plunge. Comparison hydrotherapy, which involves alternately dipping your hands and wrists in hot and cold water, is a popular treatment among naturopaths. "It's a straightforward, reliable way to increase flow to your wrists," says Douglas C. Lewis, N.D., a faculty member at Bastyr School in Kenmore, Washington. "It increases nourishment, eliminates wastes, and helps decrease pain."Dr. Lewis advises immersing the hands and wrists in tolerably warm water for 3 minutes, then in cool water for 30 mere seconds. Repeat 3 to 5 times, a few times per day.Medical MeasuresFor especially severe CTS symptoms, some mainstream doctors administer injections of powerful anti-inflammatories called corticosteroids. Unfortunately, this process doesn't always work. In one analysis, 78 percent of people with CTS saw their symptoms go back within 18 months of getting corticosteroid injections. What's more, longterm use of corticosteroids can cause serious side effects such as high blood circulation pressure, osteoporosis, and adrenal gland destruction.Surgery is known as a last-resort treatment for CTS. Through the procedure, the doctor removes a portion of the ligament that sorts one aspect of the carpal tunnel. This usually relieves pressure on the median nerve-although in 15 percent of circumstances, CTS symptoms persist. After surgery, you must wear a splint for 2-3 3 weeks. You may experience bloating at the base of your thumb for 4 months. Approximately 6 months may complete before your hand strength and stamina go back to normal.
